At the beginning of every school year, I find myself making a game plan for keeping my family healthy. With the best of intentions I vow to make veggie juices daily, give them probiotics, Vitamin D, fish oils, multivitamins and pack their lunches with nothing but fresh, organic foods. Phew! And every year…I can’t keep up. I understand boogers, sniffles, coughs and fever are all part of growing up and the maturation of our children’s immune system. However, it can feel so helpless and frustrating especially when we ourselves get sick. Ain’t no mama got time to be down and out! This Fall, I have a new line of artillery that has worked like a charm!

I spent this last year diving even deeper into educating myself about therapeutic grade essential oils. I’d been using them on and off for over 10 years but never really understood how to effectively use them. Now I feel empowered and confident using these amazing oils with my entire family. When one of us starts to feel run down or shows signs of illness, I use the following oils to support the body’s natural defenses:

RC: may give relief from colds, sore throats, coughs and respiratory congestion. It may help decongest sinus passages and relieve allergy symptoms. This is a blend of 3 varieties of Eucalyptus, Myrtle, Pine, Spruce, Marjoram, Lavender, Cypress and Peppermint. One of my absolute favorite blends! I put a few drops in the home diffuser and let it run while my kids sleep. Not only does it smell fabulous but they don’t wake up coughing so often and stuffy in the morning. I also apply this diluted on their chest when they are congested.

PURIFICATION: an amazingly diverse blend of essential oils including Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Melaleuca and Myrtle. Its properties are cleansing, purifying and in my experience has helped clear the boogers and decrease the time our family has been down and out. The minute I start feeling that nasty tickle in my throat or my kids complain of their throat being sore, I rub Purification on the outside of their neck around their glands. I apply it every couple hours.

THIEVES: An angel of an oil! I seriously can’t live with out this in my life. Its my first line of defense when I start feeling that tickle in my throat. As the legend goes, it was created from research based on a group of 15th-century thieves who rubbed oils on themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. When apprehended, the thieves were given the chance to tell what their secret was in exchange for a more lenient punishment. They confessed to use a formula of herbs, spices, and oils including clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary. I rub diluted Thieves on the bottom of my kiddos feet to boost their immunity and support their natural defenses. I also place a few drops in the diffuser and run it during the night so they don’t pass the coodies to one another.

PEPPERMINT: After giving this oil a whirl, you’ll be tossing the Vicks Vapor Rub and Tiger Balm in the trash! Nothing is more invigorating than a whiff of peppermint oil. Whether its a nagging headache, stuffiness or feeling way too hot, peppermint oil may be the ticket to feeling better fast. When the kids have a fever, I rub diluted peppermint along their spine and the bottom of their feet. If they have a headache, I do the same along their hairline and temples {not too close to the eyes because its super strong and can make their eyes water}.

Mama’s Cold Buster Tea

The moment I feel a sore throat coming on, I begin applying Purification to the outside of my throat, on my glands, every couple of hours. I also make an amazing tea to boost my immune system and stop the cold in its tracks:

2-3 drops Thieves essential oil

1/2 Fresh lemon squeezed into mug {or 2-3 drops Lemon essential oil}

1 heaping teaspoon raw honey

Mix the above ingredients in warm water {not boiling but not luke warm} and drink 2-3 times a day. I continue this regimen until I feel better THEN go an extra day longer to make sure I’ve really kicked the cold. I follow the same routine with my kids but cut the dosage in half for those under the age of 12.

In love and health, Alyssa XOOX
